2012 Padres FanFest

I took a trip down to San Diego this weekend with a couple of friends for Padres FanFest. I had never been to Petco Park before, and I must admit, it's one of the nicest stadiums I have been to. I knew I wanted to take the stadium tour and buy merchandise at the garage sale but my mission was to get autographs. So that's what I did as soon as I arrived.

The Padres had different players and coaches paired up at different stations. You had to get tickets for those stations as you walked into the park. All the stations overlapped each other buy thirty minutes making it impossible to go to every one. So basically you had to pick and choose.

The first station I hit was former Dodger and current Padres first base coach Dave Roberts and pitcher Luke Gregerson. Getting Dave Roberts' auto was one of my main goals that day, and I'm glad I accomplished it. Dave was very nice. He chatted with everyone and even took pictures. He was also signing everything that was put in front of him, so I wish I had brought more to get signed, but I did manage to get a couple from him.

Next up was the Yonder Alonso/Joe Thatcher station. This one was kind of a throw-in for me before we took the stadium tour. Yonder didn't seem like he wanted to be there. He was signing very fast and hardly acknowledged the fans. Joe Thatcher was a little friendlier.

We didn't have to get to the next station for a couple of hours, so we decided to take the stadium tour. It was a quick run through the facility, but we got to see the training room, locker room and the dugout. From there we went to the garage sale. Everything was very cheap, so I picked up three Tony Hawk bobbleheads and a pin set.

From there we went to the next station, which was for former Yankee and Hall of Fame broadcaster Jerry Coleman and catcher Nick Hundley. I think Jerry was having a senior moment because he seemed out of it. But he did give me an HOF inscription on a ball. I got Hundley on a Padres postcard.

After this we went down to the main stage on the field where Cory Luebke, Tim Stauffer and Huston Street were getting interviewed. When the interview session was over, the three signed for fans. I was only able to get Street.

At this point the FanFest was coming to an end, but the Padres did have a couple more stations set up, so we went to one more, Will Venable and Brad Brach.

The very last thing we did when we left was visit Tony Gwynn's statue. The day wouldn't be complete without seeing Mr. Padre. I want to give a big shout out to Teresa and Alex. I had a great time you guys.

The last thing I want to say is that the Dodgers should have been holding FanFests like this years ago. They are finally going to do one this year on a game day, which I'm happy about, but I would've preferred they did it in the offseason.

Argh! A Trade With Pirates Treasure Room

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the Pittstburgh Pirates. When I was younger, I was a big fan of Andy Van Slyke, Bobby Bonilla and Barry Bonds. Then Barry went to that team up north and turned into a freak and everything changed. Anyway, when I discovered Pirates Treasure Room, I thought it was one of the cooler card blogs around. Brian does have one of the finer collections of Pirates cards.

A few weeks back, I took a peak into the Treasure Room's trade bait page and found a Clayton Kershaw jersey card I was interested in. Brian and I were able to work out a trade. When I finally got my yellow envelope in the mail, I was surprised to find not one, but two Kershaw jersey cards inside! Brian also threw in a Matt Kemp jersey card as well, plus an assortment of Dodger cards.

Thanks for the generous package Brian. I am sending out another one to you this week.

Trade With Justin's World

I've been very lazy lately and I haven't been posting very much. But tonight I'm gonna try to get back into the swing of things. And I'm gonna start off with a couple of trade posts.

A few weeks ago, Justin, from the great blog Justin's World, offered up a Deron Williams autograph he won in a contest. I commented that I was interested and we worked something out. It's not often I send Dodger cards out to get something other than a Dodger card in return, but that's what happened in this trade. I sent Justin a Clayton Kershaw In Person autograph and an assortment of cards for his various PCs to get the Deron.

Thanks for the Williams auto Justin! I hope we can make another trade in the future.

Dodger Bloggers Softball Tournament

More 2012 Bobbleheads Around The Majors

A few more MLB teams have added bobbleheads to their 2012 promotional schedules.

The Milwaukee Brewers have always been a great bobblehead team. This year they have six on the schedule: Jonathan Lucroy on April 22, Yovani Gallardo on May 13, Nyjer Morgan on June 10, Italian Racing Sausage on July 1, Bob Uecker on July 29 and Aramis Ramirez on September 16.

The Washington Nationals are giving away three nodders this season. Stephen Strasburg gets the first of three bobbleheads on April 14. Slugger Michael Morse get his on August 5 and the third goes to 3B Ryan Zimmerman on September 8.

The Cleveland Indians are going old school with their bobbleheads in 2012. Four of the five they are giving away are former players. Joe Carter on May 20, Carlos Baerga on June 3, Asdrubal Cabrera on June 18, Sandy Alomar Jr on the 4th of July and Gaylord Perry on August 12.

The Toronto Blue Jays have 3 bobblehead nights this year. Brandon Morrow on May 20, Yunel Escobar on June 3 and Ricky Romero on August 19.

The San Francisco Giants released their promotional schedule weeks ago, but today they announced their Special Events dates. They've got everything there from Chinese Heritage Night to Cinco De Mayo Night to Brewfest. On September 4, the team will honor native San Franciscan Bruce Lee with a bobblehead.

2012 serves as the "Year of the Dragon", so what better way to celebrate than to honor the life and times of The Dragon himself, Bruce Lee? Lee, a San Francisco native, went on to become arguably the most renowned martial artist of all time, and the Giants would like to recognize that! The Chicago White Sox only have two bobbleheads scheduled. Robin Ventura gets his on May 26. Not sure if they're going player or manager on this one. The second bobble is the Beer Vendor bobblehead on August 4.

2004 Fleer Greats Jeff Torborg Autograph

A couple months ago I made a trade with my buddy Spiegel from Nomo's Sushi Platter. One of the cards I got from him was this 2004 Fleer Greats Jeff Torborg autograph. I honestly don't remember what I gave him in return, but I needed a 'Borg auto, so I was more than happy to give him the cards he wanted.

Jeff Torborg is probably best known as a manager and coach, but he did have a nice career as a Dodger backup catcher from 1964 to 1970. He caught three of the more memorable games in Dodger history: Sandy Koufax's perfect game on September 9, 1965, Bill Singer's no-hitter on July 20, 1970, and the fifth of Don Drysdale's six consecutive 1968 shutouts. Torborg also caught the first of Nolan Ryan's seven no-hitters as a member of the California Angels in 1973.

Kershaw And Dodgers Agree On Two-Year Deal

The Dodgers and Cy Young Award Winner Clayton Kershaw agreed to a two-year $19 million deal today to avoid arbitration. Kersh will earn $7.5 million in 2012 and $11 million in 2013. The deal also includes a $500,00 signing bonus.

Kershaw, 24 next month, accepted $19 million for two years to avoid arbitration, after earning $500,000 last year. He had sought a $10 million salary, with the club offering $6.5 million and a hearing scheduled for Feb. 14.

Colletti confirmed the sides discussed deals for one, two and four years, plus an option. New negotiator Alex Tamin was prepared to go to a hearing and argue that Kershaw's $10 million asking price was an overreach, but the sides were able to work things out.

Kershaw said he had no specific toys he wanted to buy with the money -- which included a $500,000 signing bonus and salaries of $7.5 million and $11 million -- but said he "needs to get Cy Young presents for the people who have helped me out along the way."

A 2011 All-Star, Kershaw won the NL's Triple Crown for pitching: leading the league with 21 wins (tied), a 2.28 ERA and 248 strikeouts. Sandy Koufax (1963, '65 and '66) and Dazzy Vance (1924) are the only other Dodgers pitchers to win the Triple Crown. Kershaw was also among league leaders in opponents' batting average, innings pitched, complete games, shutouts and WHIP.

Kershaw (21-5 overall) was named winner of an NL Gold Glove Award (leading the league with nine pickoffs), the first Dodger to win a Cy Young and Gold Glove in the same year since Orel Hershiser. He also won the Warren Spahn Award as the best left-handed pitcher in MLB; won Players Choice outstanding pitcher in the NL; was named to The Sporting News NL All-Star team; was a finalist for the Roberto Clemente Award; and was named Dodgers pitcher of the year by MLB.com.

Kershaw's wins and ERA were the best for a Dodgers starting pitcher since Hershiser in 1988, and his strikeout total was the best for a Dodger since Koufax's 317 in 1966. He became the Dodgers' first 20-game winner since Ramon Martinez in 1990. Kershaw went 13-1 over the second half, 12-1 at Dodger Stadium, and finished the season with eight consecutive wins.

Kershaw began his third full season in the Major Leagues as the Opening Day starter, and ended it by becoming the youngest 20-game winner in the Major Leagues since 20-year-old Dwight Gooden in 1985 -- and the youngest Dodgers 20-game winner since 21-year-old Ralph Branca won 21 games in 1947. He went 12-2 against the NL West -- 5-0 against the Giants and 4-0 against their ace, two-time Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum.

I wish they would have been able to give him more years, but I think Dodger fans will still be happy. I also think the Dodgers got a great deal here. I can't wait for the season to start!

First Look: Don Drysdale & Maury Wills Dual Bobblehead

We're getting a glimpse of the first Dodger bobblehead of 2012, the Don Drysdale & Maury Wills dual bobble. The guys are standing on a patch of grass atop a gold base. In front of both players is a plaque. 1962 Cy Young Award winner in front of Drysdale and 1962 NL MVP in front of Wills. The characteristics on both of them are pretty accurate. I've got to admit they did an excellent job on this one.

This bobblehead will be given away on Saturday, April 28 when the Dodgers play the Washington Nationals.

SoCal Bobblehead News: Angels, 66ers, Blaze

As most Dodger fans patiently await the first images of any of the ten 2012 bobbleheads, the rival Anaheim Angels have done some quick work in the promotional department. They released the first picture of the Albert Pujols bobblehead that will be given away on April 17 when the team takes on the Oakland Athletics. Presented by FreeCreditScore.com, this bobblehead will be given away to all fans in attendance.

From what I can see, there's nothing special here, although I do like the Pujols homerun stare. I can't wait to pick one of these up. It may not be a Dodger, but it's still one of the best players in the game.

In other Pujols bobblehead news, the Angels Single-A affiliate Inland Empire 66ers have released their promotional schedule and they're giving away a Pujols bobble as well. As a matter of fact, they're giving away four bobbleheads altogether. Here are the four:

The Bakersfield Blaze, Single-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds, are giving away five bobbleheads in 2012. I've known about these for a couple months now, but was waiting to post it once it became official. Well, it hasn't been made official yet, but I did speak with the head of the Blaze's Media Relations, and he's confirmed the five bobbleheads, but the dates are still up in the air. Dodger Bobblehead Variants

Matt Kemp gold glove

Tonight we're going to take a look at some of the variant Dodger bobbleheads that have been produced over the years. These are the bobbleheads that I know about. If there are any variants that I am missing, please comment below.

With help from David at Bobbles Galore, and some current Ebay auctions, I'm gonna give as much info as I can and show as many pictures as possible.

We'll start with the Fred McGriff Gold Bat bobblehead. In 2003, 500 McGriff bobbleheads were made with gold bats to commemorate his upcoming 500th homerun. The only problem was the Crime Dog never got to number 500, finishing his career with 493 homers. Some of these were given away to Dodger employees and many were donated to charity.You see these on Ebay every once in a while.

In 2004, Eric Gagne was honored with his second bobblehead in two years. This one was made to celebrate his 2003 NL Cy Young Award. The variation on this bobblehead was an all pewter version. I'm not sure how many were made at the time, but these were given away to some fans and also sold at the Top of the Park gift shop at Dodger Stadium.

2005's Cesar Izturis variant bobblehead had a gold glove. This was in honor of his 2004 Gold Glove Award. This is another one that pops up on the Bay every now and then.

A variant bobblehead I had heard about a few times but hadn't seen until recently was the 2006 Fernando Valenzuela silver base bobblehead. There were only 500 of these made.

The 2009 Curtain Call Manny Ramirez bobblehead was one of the more popular bobbleheads given away, but did you know they made 99 of them in gold? I need to see this one!

In 2010 the Dodgers started holding contests on Twitter. They gave away many prizes including two bobblehead variations. The first was the Andre Ethier Silver bat bobble to commemorate his 2009 Silver Slugger Award. The other was the Matt Kemp Catch At The Wall gold glove bobblehead to commemorate his 2009 Gold Glove Award. The first time I saw one of these was on Plaschke Thy Sweater Is Argyle. Greg won his on Twitter and later got it autographed. The Kemp is my personal favorite.

The Dodgers gave away six bobbleheads in 2011. Three of them had variants. The first was Clayton Kershaw's backwards K bobblehead. The second was Don Mattingly's "Donnie Baseball" bobblehead and the third was Duke Snider's "Duke of Flatbush" bobblehead. I'm not sure how many they produced.

First Look: Clayton Kershaw Replica Cy Young Award

Well, it's not a bobblehead, but we are getting our first look at the Clayton Kershaw replica Cy Young Award plaque. Presented by Stub Hub!, this plaque will be given away to the first 30,000 fans in attendance when the Dodgers play the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday, April 11.

Speaking of the Cy Young Award, Clayton was in New York City this weekend to accept the real plaque at the Baseball Writers' Association of America's annual dinner. He was also there to promote his new book "Arise" and he even got to tour the New York Stock Exchange Friday morning.

Trading With Foul Bunt, Plaschke The Sweater Is Argyle and the Daily Dimwit

I've completed three trades in the last couple of weeks. Here's a recap:

The first trade I made was with William from Foul Bunt. William has a nice collection of baseballs signed by Hall of Famers. When I checked his trade list I noticed he had an extra Bruce Sutter auto, which is also certified. Besides collecting HOF balls, William is also a huge Orioles fan, so I offered up a couple of O's bobbleheads and cards. We finally worked something out, and now I have a Bruce Sutter auto in my collection. Thank you William!

This past Sunday I had the opportunity to meet NL Cy Young award winner Clayton Kershaw. While at the Kershaw appearance, I met up with Greg from Plaschke, Thy Sweater Is Argyle. Over the last few weeks we had been working on a trade for one of my three Rubby De La Rosa autographs and we were finally able to complete it that day.Well, actually Greg brought his end of the trade up to the Kershaw appearance and I mailed my part of the trade to him. Anyway, I got a 2008 Allen & Ginter Matt Kemp jersey card and a 2008 Upper Deck Ramon Troncoso auto in return. Thanks for the trade Greg and I can't wait for the next Kershaw appearance.

The final trade I made was with Sam from The Daily Dimwit. Sam has had the honor of being the first to do a couple of things on Dodgerbobble.com. He won my first bobblehead contest and he was the first follower on my Dodgerbobble Trade Bait page. Sam saw a David Matranga auto/jersey card on the trade bait page and asked me if I'd take a 2007 Upper Deck Masterpieces Andy LaRoche auto for it. My only LaRoche autograph is a dual auto card with Rafael Furcal, so I was happy to get a card with just his signature on it. Thank you Sam. Hopefully you'll have another first on Dodgerbobble.com some day.

Angels Announce 2012 Promotional Schedule, Pujols Gets A Bobblehead

The Anaheim Angels released their 2012 promotional schedule today and it includes two bobbleheads. Way back on December 7, I mentioned that the Angels released their promotional schedule to their season ticket holders, and it included a Mark Trumbo bobblehead on April 17. Well now they've changed Trumbo to Albert Pujols. From the moment they signed Albert, I had a feeling they'd do this. I love the idea and I can't wait to get one.

The other bobblehead the Angels are giving away is Peter Bourjos on May 16. Bourjos was the winner of the bobblehead fan voting, getting 56% of the vote. He was going up against Howie Kendrick(39%) and Jordan Walden(3%).

2010 Bowman Platinum Josh Lindblom Autograph

One of the bright spots in the Dodger bullpen last year was Josh Lindblom. The righty put up some decent numbers in 27 appearances, going 1-0 with a 2.73 era and a 1.045 whip while striking out 28. I think he's earned himself a spot in the 'pen next year.

I got to thinking about Josh while in line for Clayton Kershaw's autograph yesterday. Like Clayton, Josh has his own charity, The Josh Lindblom Foundation, which helps children and families in need.

Well tonight I thought I'd show one of my Josh Lindblom autographs. This is his 2010 Bowman Platinum Blue Refractor and it's numbered 1/99. I'd have to go through my collection, but I think this is my only card that's numbered 1 of anything. Besides that, I really like this card 'cause it's Dodger blue!

Player Appearance: Clayton Kershaw

2011 National League Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw and his wife Ellen made an appearance today at the Ralphs market in Porter Ranch. It was one of many stops on their tour promoting the book "Arise" which they co-wrote. Clayton and Ellen were scheduled to meet fans and sign the book from 1-3 pm. They were there to sign the book only. No outside memorabilia was allowed.

I arrived at Ralphs at 10:00 am and I purchased a couple of books. With the Ralphs Reward card the book came to $10.79 plus tax, with 5% of the proceeds going to Kersh's charity, Kershaw's Challenge. After getting in line, the event promoters handed everyone a list of guidelines which basically said we couldn't pose for pictures or get outside memorabilia signed.

At around 12:45, Clayton and Ellen arrived. I was so excited when they got there. They began signing right away and they were even posing for pictures! Both Clayton and Ellen are very nice and down-to-earth, chatting with everyone.

I'd say there were about 100 people in line and once they all got their books signed, a group of us thought we'd take a chance at getting some other items signed, but we were rejected by Clayton himself. Fail! I guess it never hurts to try, right?

Anyway, Thanks to Clayton and Ellen and thanks to Ralphs Market for holding this event. Also, thanks to Roberto at Vin Scully Is My Homeboy for all the information, it was nice seeing you and everyone else today.

Vin Scully On His 2012 Bobblehead And The Official Press Release

On Monday the Dodgers announced the final three bobblehead giveaways of 2012, one of which is the legendary Vin Scully. I commented that I didn't know how they finally convinced Vin to allow his likeness on a bobbblehead. Tom Hoffarth of the Los Angeles Daily News gets the answer from the man himself. Vin Scully on his 2012 bobblehead:

"Since I won't be here for the 100th anniversary, I agreed to do the 50th, otherwise, I would be open to questions as to why I didn't do it. It's far easier this way."

Gibson played just three seasons with Los Angeles, but as the heart and soul of the 1988 World Champions, provided one of the greatest moments in baseball history with his dramatic walk-off home run to win Game 1 of the Fall Classic. This is the second Dodger Stadium bobblehead for Gibson.

Hall of Fame Broadcaster Vin Scully will be featured on the club’s final bobblehead night on Aug. 30 when the Dodgers take on Arizona. Entering an unprecedented 63^rd season broadcasting the Dodgers, Scully’s 62 years of consecutive service with the Dodgers is the longest of any sports broadcaster with one team. This marks the Hall of Famer’s first Dodger Stadium bobblehead.

The best way for fans to collect the entire Dodger Stadium Greats Bobblehead Series, to purchase Opening Day tickets and to participate in all other 2012 promotions, is to purchase season tickets which start at $5 per ticket and $16 per ticket for Field Level seats. The collectible series is also included in a 10-game mini plan. The Dodgers just announced the final three bobbleheads to be given away in 2012.

Bobblehead# 5 - 1992 Rookie of the Year, Eric Karros
Bobblehead#7 - 1988 World Series hero, Kirk Gibson
Bobblehead#10 - The greatest Dodger of them all, Vin Scully

Eric Karros and Kirk Gibson are fine choices. I would've loved to have seen a bobblehead with all five rookies of the year, including Mike Piazza. Gibby already has a Dodger bobble, but I think he was due for a newer, better looking version.

I think the biggest news is that Vinny is finally getting a bobblehead. This is the one all Dodger fans wanted. Along with Sandy Koufax, there aren't any more beloved Dodgers, and they both are finally getting their bobblehead dues. I don't know how they convinced the humble Scully into allowing a bobblehead, but I'm glad they did.

Bobblehead Of The Day: Mike Piazza Headliner

While technically not a bobblehead, this Mike Piazza figure is about the same size and is built similarly to one. Produced by Corinthians, Headliners XL's figures featured some of the biggest stars in baseball. This Mike Piazza was produced in 1998, along with eleven other players. There is one other Dodger on that list, Hideo Nomo. Here is the complete 1998 Headliners Roster:

Even though the head doesn't bobble, I still love this thing. From the mullet to the mustache, this looks so much like Mike Piazza. Another feature I like is the removable hat.

Mike Piazza was my favorite Dodger in the 90's and like many other Dodger fans, I was very sad the day he was traded. I always hoped the Dodgers would giveaway a bobblehead of him. They haven't announced one yet, but I have a feeling he'll finally get one in 2012. For now, this is the closest thing I've got to a Mike Piazza bobble.

2001 Topps Archive Ralph Branca Autograph

Happy 86th Birthday Ralph Branca! Branca played for the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1944 to 1953 and again in 1956. He has a career record of 88-68 with an ERA of 3.79 and 829 strikeouts.

Ralph Branca is probably best remembered for one pitch. That pitch was thrown in a playoff game on October 3, 1951 against the rival New York Giants.

From Ralph Branca's Wiki:

Branca entered the game in the ninth inning and surrendered a walk-off homerun known as "The Shot Heard 'Round the World" to Bobby Thomson, giving the Giants the National League pennant.
Branca later learned from Detroit Tiger Ted Gray that the Giants had stolen the signs to the two pitches he threw Thomson. That rumor was confirmed in The Wall Street Journal in 2001, when Giants Sal Yvars admitted that he relayed to Thomson the stolen signs for Branca's fastballs. Joshua Prager detailed the revelations in a book entitled The Echoing Green: The Untold Story of Bobby Thomson, Ralph Branca and The Shot Heard Round the World. Thomson acknowledged to Prager that the Giants had stolen signs in 1951 but denied that he had foreknowledge of the pitch he hit off Branca for the pennant-winning home run. According to Branca, Thomson admitted to accepting the stolen signs during his first three at-bats of that game, but claimed that he did not do so in the final at-bat; Branca indicated that he did not believe Thomson's denials and remained convinced that Thomson was in fact tipped off on the fateful pitch.

Despite giving up one of the biggest homeruns in baseball history and the circumstances surrounding it, Branca was never bitter. In fact, he developed a friendship with Bobby Thomson that lasted until Thomson's death in 2010.

Another interesting fact about Branca is that he was half Jewish. Even though he was raised Catholic, his mother, who immigrated to the United States in 1901, was a Hunganrian Jew who converted to Catholicism. Branca had relatives who died in the Holocaust. It's a pretty interesting story which is also told by Joshua Prager. You can read about it here.

2012 Bobbleheads Around The Majors

As we get closer to the start of the baseball season, more and more teams are announcing their promotional schedules. The Dodgers released theirs earlier than most of the other teams, and announced that they will be giving away ten bobbleheads in 2012. Let's take a look at some of the other teams that are giving away bobbleheads in the upcoming season.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are giving away one bobblehead in 2012, a Joel Hanrahan All-Star Bobblehead on May 12 to all fans in attendance. They were also the first team to show a picture of the bobble.

The Cincinnati Reds have four bobblehead nights scheduled. Joey Votto Gold Glove on May 12, Sean Casey on June 23, Jay Bruce All-Star on July 18 and Johnny Cueto on August 4. All four bobbleheads will be given to the first 25,000 fans in attendance.

The San Francisco Giants are giving four bobbleheads next season as well. Sergio Romo on May 5, A 2002 Players Bobblehead on June 30, Madison Bumgarner on July 15 and Pablo Sandoval on August 26. All four of these bobbleheads will be given to the first 25,000 fans in attendance.

The Philadelphia Phillies will give two bobbleheads away. The first is a Toyota Cliff Lee on June 4 and the second one is Hunter Pence on August 21. Both bobbleheads will be given to all fans in attendance.

The Oakland Athletics will only be giving away two bobbleheads in 2012. Rolllie Fingers gets the first of the two on April 21. The second bobblehead is a 20th consecutive victory Scott Hatteberg bobblehead on August 18.

It's still early in the offseason. Once more teams announce their promotional schedules, I'll post which bobbleheads they'll be giving away.

State Of The Blog / Trade Bait

First off I'd like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! I have a lot planned for 2012. I have a new sponsor, which I'll announce soon. 2011 Bowman Sterling Rubby De La Rosa Autograph

I love red, white and blue Dodger hat.

The Dodgers had a handful of youngsters make their debuts in 2011. One of the more memorable debuts was from the hard throwing Rubby De La Rosa, the Dodgers 2010 Minor League Pitcher of the Year. The 22 year-old was called up from AA Chattanooga on May 24 and he pitched that very same day, throwing a scoreless eighth inning against Houston. He retired the side in order, striking out two Astros.

Rubby made his first career start two weeks later in Philadelphia. He walked five batters in the first two innings, but settled down nicely to pick up the W. He would appear in 13 games for the Dodgers last year, starting ten of those games. De La Rosa's fastball regularly clocked in the high 90's, even hitting 100 MPH. He finished the year 4-5 with a 3.71 era and 60 strikeouts in 60.2 innings after suffering a tear to the ulnar collateral ligament. He would undergo Tommy John Surgery in August.

This was one of the more heartbreaking injuries in 2011 which also affected 2012. I really thought he would have a spot in the starting rotation in '12. With Ned Colletti signing Chris Capuano and Aaron Harang through 2013, a spot in the rotation two years from now seems unlikely. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Anyway, when I found out Rubby had a couple of autograph cards in the 2011 Bowman Sterling set, I knew I had to get my hands on one. As a matter of fact, I got my hands on three of them, one of which is going to Greg at Plaschke, Thy Sweater Is Argyle. If anyone is interested in the third, just comment below, I'm open for a trade.

Bobblehead Of The Day: Steve Garvey Musical Bobblehead

Since I've posted all the Dodger Stadium giveaway bobbleheads, I'm going to start posting some of the more obscure and lesser known Dodger bobbleheads. There are many out there, and I don't have them all, but I'll show the ones I have and the ones I know about. I've already shown my Dodger Dog bobblehead and my Bob Hope bobblehead. Today I'm gonna show my Steve Garvey musical bobblehead.

This bobblehead was a Dodger Stadium exclusive and was only sold at the Top of the Park gift shop in 2004. I believe they're were only 500 made. I could be wrong about that, so if someone knows otherwise, please let me know. This bobblehead is 2 inches larger than the normal Dodger Stadium bobblehead and stands at about nine inches. There is a baseball between Garvey's feet and when pushed, it plays "Take Me Out To The Ballgame." There is also a Ron Cey version as well.

Harrison Ford, Chadwick Boseman To Star In Jackie Robinson Biopic

Variety.com is reporting that Legendary Pictures has announced who will play Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey in the upcoming Robinson biopic "42." Robinson will be portrayed by Chadwick Boseman and Rickey will be played by Harrison Ford. It was announced earlier this year that Robert Redford was going to play Rickey, but has passed the role on to Ford

Did the studio make the right choices? I think Boseman looks a lot like Jackie and Ford looks a bit like Branch Rickey. I think he's a better choice than Robert Redford.

Matt Kemp Wins Player Of The Year GIBBY

Congratulations to Matt Kemp for winning yet another award, the GIBBY(Greatness in Baseball Yearly) for Player of the Year.

It's been a few minutes since Matt Kemp last won an award and ... wait ... here's another.

It was just announced that the Dodgers' All-Star center fielder was named winner of the Player of the Year GIBBY.

The Greatness in Baseball Yearly (GIBBY) Award winners were calculated based on four segments of voters that each accounted for 25 percent of the total vote: 1) millions of fans at MLB.com; 2) media; 3) front-office personnel; and 4) MLB alumni.

The ultimate honors of baseball's awards season, 2011 GIBBY trophies were awarded to Major League Baseball's top player, starting pitcher, rookie, breakout player, comeback player, wow factor, closer, setup man, defensive player, manager and executive, as well as to the 2011 Postseason MVP, with no restriction to league affiliation.GIBBY trophies also honored the year's top play, moment, walk-off, performance, oddity, fan moment and postseason moment from MLB.com's Must C highlight vault.About the only award Kemp didn't win this year was the National League MVP, which the Baseball Writers' Association of America gave to Ryan Braun, with Kemp the runner-up.

NL MVP Award winner or not, the 27-year-old Kemp batted .324 (third in the NL) while leading the league in homers (39), RBIs (126), runs scored (115) and total bases (353). The unprecedented Dodger Stadium Greats Bobblehead Series pays tribute to some of the most unforgettable Dodgers in Dodger Stadium history. The first bobblehead in the collection celebrates the 50^th anniversary of Dodger Stadium as it pairs two stars from the year the stadium opened; Maury Wills with Don Drysdale. The Dodgers will celebrate Mike Scioscia’s contributions to the franchise with the fourth bobblehead in the Dodger Stadium Greats series scheduled during the club’s annual Interleague series with the Angels on June 12. Scioscia is Los Angeles’ all-time leader with 1,394 games played at catcher and won two World Series during his 13 seasons with the Dodgers from 1980-92. Dodgers Unveil The Names Of Six More Dodger Stadium Great Bobbleheads

Today the Dodgers announced six of the 10 bobbleheads they'll be giving away in 2012. From the Dodgers Twitter page:

Bobblehead #1: A dual bobblehead featuring two stars from the 1962 season, Maury Wills paired with Don Drysdale (4/28).

Bobblehead #2: For the first time ever, three-time All-Star & Cy Young Award winner Orel Hershiser (5/15).

Bobblehead #3: A quad bobblehead of the infamous Dodger infield of Garvey, Lopes, Russell, and Cey (5/29).

Bobblehead #4: The Dodgers all-time leading catcher in games played, and winner of two World Series rings, Mike Scioscia (6/12).

Bobblehead #6: Hall of Fame managers Tommy Lasorda and Walter Alston will be honored together in a dual bobblehead (7/14).

Bobblehead #9: 1981 Cy Young Award winner and Rookie of the Year, El Toro Fernando Valenzuela (8/21).

The first thought that comes to mind is "FERNANDO AGAIN?" I guess they have to give him one if they're doing Dodger Stadium Greats. Besides that, I think I'm pretty pleased with these choices. The great infield of Garvey, Cey, Lopes and Russell getting a quad bobblehead is a great idea. I'm happy to see Mike Scioscia is getting one, as well as Orel Hershiser. I can't argue with the Lasorda/Alston dual nodder either. I would have loved for Maury Will to get his own bobblehead, but I'm fine with him and Don Drysdale getting paired up.

Along with Sandy Koufax on August 7, we now know about seven of the ten. I wonder who they have in mind for the final three.

New Marlins Ballpark Will Have A Bobblehead Museum

With less than four months until Opening Day, the Miami Marlins are trying finish building their new ballpark. It's about 92% complete and it seems like they're right on pace. Today Marlins beat writer Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post showed some pictures from the Marlins Ballpark media tour he recently took. We get a glimpse of many areas of the stadium, including the club house, the press box, and even the Beer Distribution Room. But the one pic that caught my eye was one of a sign that points fans to the Team Store, the First Aid station and the Bobblehead Museum...yes, the Bobblehead Museum!

I'm not really sure what bobbleheads are going to be in there, but I am sure they'll have all the Marlins SGA's in there from Cliff Floyd to Jeff Conine to AJ Burnett. Now I really want to take a trip to this new ballpark so I can see what the Bobblehead Museum is all about.

Maybe one day Dodger Stadium will have a bobblehead museum. Dodger fans love their bobbleheads and I know it would be a popular attraction.

Player Appearance: Justin Sellers

Dodgers Infielder Justin Sellers made an appearance at Valley Sports Cards & Memorabilia On Sunday, December 11. This was Justin's first public signing appearance. He was scheduled to meet fans and sign autographs from 1:00-2:00pm. The autographs were $20 each for any item or two for $35.

It was a pleasure watching Justin Sellers play in 2011. After getting called up to the Dodgers in August, Sellers played second base, shortstop and third, impressing at all three positions. Along with Dee Gordon, Justin brought some excitement to Dodger Stadium.

Now I really wanted Justin's autograph, and I tried getting it a couple of times at Dodger Stadium with no success. So when I heard he was signing at my local card shop in November, I was pretty excited. Unfortunately, that appearance was cancelled because the Dodgers asked him to play Winter ball in the Dominican Republic. The event was finally rescheduled for December 11.

Since Valley Sports Cards is only a few minutes from my home, I didn't have to get there too early. When I arrived there were only a few people waiting. I paid for two 8x10's and two autographs, picking one set up for Mike at Nomo's Sushi Platter, then I got in line.

Justin arrived right on time at 1:00, and started signing a few minutes later. He was very friendly, chatting with everyone and posing for pictures. When I got to the front of the line, I shook his hand and told him I enjoyed watching him play and I hoped to see him play some more in 2012. He signed the 8x10s and took a few pictures with me.

This was one of the better events I have been too. Everything went so smoothly and there was a great atmosphere at the shop. Thanks to Justin Sellers, I hope he gets a little playing time in 2012 even though Ned Colletti signed like ten infielders this offseason. And a big thanks to Alex and Valley Sports Cards. The event was awesome! And thanks to MVP Trading Cards Company for putting it all together. Also, it was nice hanging out and talking Dodgers with Ramon, Irene and Scott.

Dodgers Sign Tony Gwynn Jr For Two Years

Sticking with his backloaded-two-year deal theme, Ned Colletti signed Tony Gwynn Jr today. The deal is worth $2 million. He'll earn $850,000 in 2012 and $1.15 million in 2013.

The Los Angeles Dodgers today announced the signing of outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. to a two-year contract. General manager Ned Colletti made the announcement.The versatile outfielder appeared in a career-high 136 games at all three outfield positions with the Dodgers last year in his first season with the club and posted a .907 zone rating, which tied for second among qualifying National League outfielders. The 29-year-old ranked among the league leaders with a .993 fielding percentage, tying for ninth among NL outfielders with just one error in 677.0 innings, and tied for 15^th on the circuit with eight outfield assists. Gwynn averaged 0.11 assists per 9.0 innings, which led National League outfielders.

At the plate, Gwynn batted .256 and posted career-best marks with 12 doubles, 22 stolen bases and 22 RBIs. He also tied with Jamey Carroll for the team lead with a career high-tying six triples. The left-handed hitter batted .333 (8-for-24) in 27 appearances as a pinch-hitter, tying for the seventh-highest mark in the Majors, and has a .288 career batting average in that role.

Gwynn delivered in pressure situations for the Dodgers throughout the season, hitting a walk-off single to beat the Angels on June 26 and batting .286 (18-for-63) in close and late situations. He also preserved a pair of Dodger victories with ninth-inning diving catches in the field, doing so with two outs and the bases loaded on April 29 in a 3-2 win against the Padres and again on June 11 with the bases full to save an 11-7 win at Colorado.

Gwynn was originally selected by Milwaukee in the second round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft and traded to San Diego in exchange for outfielder Jody Gerut during the 2009 season. He attended San Diego State University, where he played for his father and Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, and graduated from Poway (CA) High School. His uncle, Chris, was the Dodgers’ first-round selection in the 1985 draft and played parts of seven seasons in Los Angeles (1987-91 and 1994-95).

I'm trying to get my head around this one. Yeah, TGJ's got a good glove and it's nice having in the outfield in those close games, but he was under team control for 2012. All Ned had to do was tender him a contract and he's in Dodger blue next season, yet he gives Gwynn a second year. Huh? Not that it's a lot of money, it's just that the second guaranteed year was unnecessary.

With five outfielders now signed in 2012, where does this leave Jerry Sands?

The "Moon Man" Jay Johnstone

UPDATE: As many people have pointed out in the comments and in emails to me, this is not Jay Johnstone on the card. I've seen Johnstone's picture and this card hundreds of times, I've met him in person as well and I'm a little surprised I didn't realize this until it was pointed out. I'll try to get an answer on this mystery Dodger or maybe someone has a definitive answer as to who this is.

Anyone catch the lunar eclipse yesterday? I was stuck in Downtown LA, so I wasn't able to get the telescope out to see it. But I did view it live on my phone with the SLOOH Space Camera ap. It was an interesting way of watching the event, and I'm happy I got to see it. There won't be another lunar eclipse until 2014.

Of course this got me thinking of the blog, and how I could incorporate the lunar eclipse into today's post. My first thought was Wally Moon, but I've already done a post on him. Then I remembered Jay Johnstone, the "Moon Man."

Johnstone, who was one of baseball's great pranksters, played for the Dodgers in 1980, 1981 part of 1982 and again in 1985. But he got his nickname while with the California Angels.

At some point during his early years with the Angels, Johnstone acquired a lasting nickname: Moon Man. Catcher Bob “Buck” Rodgers liked to tell one version of the story. “One day he lost a ball in the sun, but when he came back to the bench he said, ‘I lost it in the moon.’' The connections with outer space were fitting, especially when the whole nation was watching the Apollo missions. In 1981, though, Johnstone told Jim Murray of the Los Angeles Times that it came about as he sneaked back into his hotel room after curfew, cat-burglar style, and told another roommate, “Out of the way, you’re standing in my moonlight.”

Ryan Braun Tests Positive For PEDs

National League MVP Ryan Braun, who last season led the Milwaukee Brewers to their first division title in nearly three decades, has tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug and faces a 50-game suspension if the initial finding is upheld, two sources familiar with the case told "Outside the Lines."

Major League Baseball has not announced the positive test because Braun is disputing the result through arbitration.

A spokesman for Braun confirmed the positive test Saturday and issued a statement: "There are highly unusual circumstances surrounding this case which will support Ryan's complete innocence and demonstrate there was absolutely no intentional violation of the program. While Ryan has impeccable character and no previous history, unfortunately, because of the process we have to maintain confidentiality and are not able to discuss it any further, but we are confident he will ultimately be exonerated."

The 28-year-old Braun had to provide a urine sample for testing during the playoffs, and he was notified of the positive test sometime in late October -- about a month before he was named the National League's most valuable player.

The positive result was triggered by elevated levels of testosterone in Braun's system, the sources also told "Outside the Lines." A subsequent, more comprehensive test revealed the testosterone was synthetic -- not produced by Braun's body.

I know it's old news already, but I still wanted to get this in simply because I'm so disappointed.Matt Kemp is my favorite baseball player and he had one of the great offensive seasons in Dodger blue, if not THE greatest ever. He was also runner-up in the 2011 MVP voting behind Ryan Braun.

As for Braun, he's my second favorite baseball player. Like me, he's a Jewish kid from the San Fernando Valley, someone I can sort of connect with. Hearing about his positive test was like a punch in the gut.

USA Today reported Saturday night that Braun said of the test result "It's BS."

I can't wait to hear Ryan's excuse.

Nathan And Ethan, Two New Dodger Autos

I picked up a couple of 2011 Bowman Chrome Prospect autos recently, Nathan Eovaldi and Ethan Martin. One of the autos I was actually searching for, the other I just stumbled upon and bought because it was so cheap.

I was on the hunt for an Eovaldi auto. I already had an in-person autograph and wanted something certified. Eo made six decent starts for the Dodgers in 2011. The team basically shut him down at the end of the year, putting him in the bullpen. With Hiroki Kuroda leaving for free agency and the Dodgers declining Jon Garland's 2012 option, it seemed like Eovaldi was going to be the Dodgers fifth starter in '12. Of course that idea was killed when Ned Colletti signed Chris Capuano and Aaron Harang. I honestly thought the Dodgers were going to bring Kuroda back and would need a cheap option in their rotation like Eovaldi, but I was wrong.

I'm not sure what the team's plans are for Eovaldi in 2012 now. He could be back in the bullpen, he could be back in the minors, who knows. I do think we'll see him starting games for the Dodgers eventually.

I was on my nightly eBay hunt for Dodger autographs when I came across this Ethan Martin autograph. Bidding started at 99 cents with free shipping. So I placed a $1.25 bid and I ended up winning it.

Martin was the Dodgers first-round draft pick in 2008 and has been a big disappointment. He split time between Single-A Rancho Cucamonga and AA Chattanooga last year. His AA numbers were decent, going 5-3 with a 4.02 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP, mostly out of the bullpen. His Single-A numbers, not so good. As a starter at Rancho, he went 4-4 with a 7.36 ERA and a 1.86 WHIP. It may be time to go in another direction for young Martin.

The Angels To Give Away Two Bobbleheads In 2012

Although it hasn't been posted on their website, the Anaheim Angels have released their 2012 promotional schedule to their season ticket holders. The Angels are going the opposite route of the Dodgers and their Ten bobblehead giveaways though. The Angels will only be giving away two bobbleheads next year, and they're both coming early in the season. Here's the full promotional list:

Since they're only doing two, Mark Trumbo(4/17) had to be one of them. The 2011 American League Rookie of the Year runner-up had a great season and became a fan-favorite. Dodger Sign Aaron Harang

According to MLBTradeRumors.com (via MLB Network's Jon Heyman), the Dodgers have signed pitcher Aaron Harang to two-year deal worth roughly $12 million.

From MLBTR.com:

Harang, 33, enjoyed a nice rebound campaign with his hometown Padres in 2011. The former Reds ace notched 170 2/3 innings, his highest total since 2008, while posting a solid ERA of 3.64, striking out 6.5 per nine, and walking 3.1 per nine.

FIP and SIERA marks of 4.17 and 4.25, respectively suggest that Harang, a flyball pitcher (41%) was likely aided somewhat by moving from Great American Ballpark to the spacious confines of Petco Park. His new home park, Dodger Stadium, also has a history of limiting the long ball, though not as much as Petco.

I don't have a huge problem with this signing. His numbers aren't bad, although he did pitch at PetCo. I think Harang is fine as a fifth starter, and he should pitch well at Dodger Stadium. I just would've preferred Hiroki Kuroda over Harang and Chris Capuano.

The rotation is set now:
1. Clayton Kershaw
2. Chad Billingsley
3. Ted Lilly
4. Chris Capuano
5. Aaron Harang

It's one big Ace at the top of the rotation and four #5-types. And yes, Chad Billingsley is a number-five-type of pitcher. At least Kuroda would have been a solid #2.

Dodgers Sign Jerry Hairston Jr.

The Dodgers just signed utility man Jerry Hairston to a two-year, $6 million deal. According the LATimes.com's Dylan Hernandez, Hairston, who turns 36 in May, will earn $2.25 mil in 2012 and $3.75 mil in 2013.

The Los Angeles Dodgers today announced the signing of infielder/outfielder Jerry Hairston, Jr. to a two-year contract. The announcement was made by Dodger General Manager Ned Colletti.

“Jerry adds more versatility to our club and will help us at second and third base, shortstop as well as left and center field,” said Colletti. “He brings a veteran presence that can also help in the continued development of Dee Gordon.”

Last season, the 35-year-old batted a combined .270 with 21 doubles, five home runs and 31 RBI in 120 games with the Nationals and Brewers. Hairston posted a combined .961 fielding percentage and played five positions in the field, including 49 games at third base, 30 games at second base, 23 games in left field, 20 games in center field and two games at shortstop. He also appeared in 13 games as a pinch-hitter and batted .364 (4-for-11) in that role. After being acquired in a midseason trade, Hairston helped the Brewers advance to the National League Championship Series by hitting .385 (15-for-39) with eight runs scored, six doubles and four RBI in 11 postseason games.

The Illinois native is a .258 career hitter in 14 seasons with the Orioles (1998-2004), Cubs (2005-06), Rangers (2006-07), Reds (2008-09), Yankees (2009), Padres (2010), Nationals (2011) and Brewers (2011). Hairston won a World Series ring as a member of the 2009 Yankees and is a .362 career hitter in 17 postseason games. Hairston has excelled with the bases loaded throughout his career, batting .313 (25-for-80) with three grand slams. The versatile defender has a .979 career fielding percentage and has appeared at every position except for pitcher and catcher.

Hairston is a third-generation Major Leaguer, joining his grandfather Sam, his father Jerry Sr., his uncle John and brother Scott. The Scottsdale, AZ resident attended Southern Illinois University, where he was honored as a member of the school’s Hall of Fame, and was originally selected by Baltimore in the 11^th round of the 1997 First-Year Player Draft.

I'm kind of scratching my head at this signing. Not that I have a problem with Hairston, because he's extremely versatile, but why is Ned signing him now, after he's already signed Mark Ellis and Adam Kennedy? I was just joking with a friend yesterday that Ned needs to sign more veteran infielders, and look what he does!

Player Appearance: Rod Carew

Hall of Famer Rod Carew made an appearance today at the Angels Team Store in Anaheim. He was scheduled to meet fans and sign autographs from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. The appearance was part of a holiday sales event held by the Angels and AEG, operators of the Team Store. Most items in the store were 40-60% off.

I arrived at Angels Stadium at 7:30 and there were maybe twenty people in line. At 9:00 the Team Store opened and more people started showing up. The employees at the store brought quite a bit of discounted merchandise outside, including hats, jerseys, bats and bobbleheads. There's were a lot of great deals outside and a lot of good deals inside as well. I believe everything in the store was 40% off. So I picked up a Torii Hunter Forever Big Head bobblehead, which was discounted from $24.99 down to $10 and a couple of MLB baseballs. I can't resist a good deal.

Mr. Carew arrived right at 10:30 and began signing right away. We were told he would sign one item per person and he wouldn't sign bats, jerseys or magazines. The line moved pretty slowly. He was signing at a snails pace, but I did finally make it to the front at around 11:00. He signed a baseball for me and inscribed "HOF 91".

I had a great time down at the Big A. The event went smoothly and it was very organized, plus they had a bunch of great deals at the Team Store. Thanks to the Anaheim Angels and Rod Carew for everything today.

Player Appearance: Shaquille O'Neal

On Tuesday, November 29, Shaquille O'Neal, aka the Big Aristotle, aka Shaq Fu, aka Shaq Diezel, made an appearance at Barnes & Noble in Santa Monica. He was there to meet his fans and sign copies of his new book "Shaq Uncut: My Story".

Shaq was scheduled to appear at 7:00 pm. I arrived at B&N at 3:00, bought the book and they gave me a wristband. They were putting people in lettered groups of twenty, but wouldn't let anyone line up until 6:00pm. I was in Group F.

I had three hours to kill, so I hung out at 3rd Street Promenade. When 6 finally rolled around, I went and lined up at the book store. There were about 140 people there at 7:00, but none of them were Shaq. He was running late because he was talking to the media. They also told us he was scheduled to shoot Jimmy Kimmel that night, so they were going to move the line quickly.

He finally started signing at 7:30 and I got to the front of the line at 7:45. He was taking quick pictures with people, but about five people ahead of me, they stopped allowing those pictures. He signed my book, shook my hand, and the B&N staff rushed me out. The whole thing was a bit disappointing, especially after I saw the signature, a crappy crappy signature.

I was happy to finally meet one of my all-time favorite Lakers, but I wish it had been a better experience. When I left the bookstore, there were at least another 120 people still in line. I hope they all got autographs.

Player Appearance: Blake Griffin

Last Saturday I went on a journey that landed me not one, not two, but three autographs. That first auto was from Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn and I had to drive 150 miles away to San Diego to get it. I got the next two in Downtown LA on my way home. LA Clippers All-Star Forward Blake Griffin and Skateboarder Rob Dyrdek both were signing at the Los Angeles Auto show at the Convention Center.

Tony Gwynn's appearance was scheduled for 9:00 am and my friends and I were at the front of the line. Tony began signing right away so we were able to leave San Diego at 9:30. We still had a chance to get to LA for the 1:00pm Blake Griffin appearance. While on the freeway heading home, we were getting updates from my buddy Alex who was already at the Convention Center waiting in line for Griffin. He told us there were only 10 people in line. Things were looking good.

It took us about two and a half hours to get to the Convention Center. When we arrived, we were about twentieth in line and it was an hour before the signing. The four of us got wristbands and we were told Blake wouldn't sign any outside items but he would take a picture with us. Kia Motors was giving away 8x10 pictures for him to sign, plus certificates of authenticity from Panini.

Once 1:00 rolled around, we were told Blake was running late. He finally showed up at 1:15 and started signing right away. When I got to the front of the line he signed the Kia picture for me and posed for a pic. He asked me if I was having a good time at the auto show and I moved on.

While we there we saw Jesse from Los Angeles Inspiration, and he informed us that Skateboarder and "Fantasy Factory" star Rob Dyrdek was signing at the Chevy booth. We all headed over there and got that auto as well.

Overall I'd say I had a great day. I got one HOFers auto, one NBA superstar's auto and a third auto from a pretty famous skateboarder. Not bad if you ask me.

Updating The Dodger Stadium SGA List

2011 Topps Tier One Dee Gordon Auto

When I first saw the 2011 Topps Tier One design, I knew I had to get my hands on some of the Dodgers cards. My first target was one of my favorite youngsters on the team, Devaris Strange Gordon. This is my third Dee Gordon auto, and I don't think it's gonna be my last, as I've decided to start collecting Dee's cards.

On-card blue signatures always look great on Dodger cards, and this is no exception.

Yesterday I had one of those rare days where I went from one location to another and got more than one autograph. I actually was able to get three autographs yesterday. The first one I got was 150 miles away in San Diego from Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn. The other two, Clippers Forward Blake Griffin and Skateboarder Rob Dyrdek, were at the Los Angeles Auto Show. I'll share my experience with Mr. Gwynn today and move onto Griffin and Dyrdek later.

Former San Diego Padres All-Star and Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn made an appearance yesterday at El Cajon Ford. He was scheduled to meet fans and sign autographs from 9-10:00 am.

I made my 150 mile journey from the San Fernando Valley down to El Cajon with three friends early Saturday morning. It took us about 2 hours to get down there. Surprisingly, there were only two other people waiting in line when we arrived.

While we were there, my buddy Alex was giving me updates from the Los Angeles Convention Center where Blake Griffin was scheduled to sign at 1:00pm. That too was a surprisingly short line.

Mr. Gwynn arrived about 15 minutes early and started signing right at 9:00. I had heard some horror stories about Tony being snappy at past events. When I got to the signing table he was very friendly, autographing my baseball and was even joking around. But sure enough, the guy behind me got him upset. The gentleman behind me had a picture of Tony in a San Diego State basketball uniform and Tony wanted to know where he got it. The guy said he bought it from someone in line and before you knew it, Tony was out of his seat wondering who the guy was. After this person was pointed out, Tony made it clear he didn't want any of his pictures sold there because it was theft. The General Manager at the dealership even announced it over the loudspeaker. The whole ordeal had us all laughing.

When we left the Ford dealership, I got another update from Alex at the Convention Center, and there were just five people there in line. Maybe we had a chance to get Blake Griffin's auto too? So we got on the freeway and hauled ass to Downtown LA. As I already mentioned, we did get Blake's autograph, but I'll save that for another day.

Justin Sellers Appearance Rescheduled

The Justin Sellers appearance at Valley Sports Cards has been rescheduled. The new date is Sunday, December 11, 2011 from 1:00-2:30 pm. The autograph will be $20 and that's on any single item. The autograph will also include FREE authentication.

The original November 12 date was cancelled when the Dodgers asked Justin to play Winter ball in the Dominican Republic.

Congratulations to Clayton Kershaw on winning the NL Cy Young Award today. The lefty took 27 of the 32 first place votes and becomes the youngest winner since Dwight Gooden in 1985. This marks the tenth time a Dodger pitcher has won the award.

I don't think there's any surprise here at all. I'm just shocked Clayton didn't get all the first place votes.

Los Angeles Dodgers left-handed pitcher Clayton Kershaw capped off his historic 2011 season by winning the National League Cy Young Award today in voting conducted by the Baseball Writers Association of America. Kershaw earned 207 overall points and appeared in the Top-3 on every ballot, garnering 27 first-place votes, three second-place and two third place votes out of the possible 32 votes.

The 23-year-old is the second-youngest Dodger to be honored with a Cy Young Award behind Fernando Valenzuela (20, 1981) and the youngest National Leaguer to win since Dwight Gooden, who won the award in 1985 at the age of 20 with the Mets.

“I'm extremely thankful and humbled by this award,” said Kershaw. “The company that I'm in now... just to be mentioned with some of those guys. I'm just in awe. I never thought I'd be here.

Kershaw is the eighth different Dodger pitcher to win the Cy Young Award and a Dodger has now won the award 10 times, both of which are the most among Major League teams. He becomes the first Los Angeles pitcher to win the award since Eric Gagné in 2003 and the first Dodger starter to take home the Cy Young since Orel Hershiser in 1988. The Dodgers’ previous Cy Young Award winners were Valenzuela (1981), Mike Marshall (1974), Sandy Koufax (1963, 1965, 1966), Don Drysdale (1962) and Don Newcombe, who won the inaugural award in 1956.

Kershaw has already been recognized this offseason by earning the Players Choice Award as the National League’s Outstanding Pitcher, capturing a Rawlings Gold Glove Award, being selected as a Sporting News NL All-Star and winning the Warren Spahn Award as the game’s best left-handed pitcher. Kershaw was also a finalist for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet for his charitable work off the field.

In 2011, the Dallas native became just the 16th National League pitcher to win the league’s Triple Crown since 1900. Kershaw led the Majors with a 2.28 ERA, tied with Arizona’s Ian Kennedy for the N.L. lead with 21 wins and ranked first in the league with 248 strikeouts. He became just the third different Dodger pitcher to achieve the feat, joining Dazzy Vance (1924) and Sandy Koufax (1963, 1965 and 1966). The last National League pitcher to capture the Triple Crown was Jake Peavy in 2007.

The left-hander ranked among the N.L. leaders in opponents’ batting average (.207, 1st), winning percentage (.808, 21-5, 2nd), innings pitched (233.1, 3rd), complete games (5, 3rd), shutouts (2, T-2nd), WHIP (0.98, 1st) and pickoffs (9, 1st).

This past season was just Kershaw’s third complete season at the Major League level as he became the youngest Major Leaguer to win more than 20 games in a season since Gooden went 24-4 for the 1985 Mets and the youngest Dodger to win 20 since a 21-year-old Ralph Branca went 21-12 for Brooklyn in 1947. Kershaw became one of just four pitchers since 1970 to reach the 20-win plateau with 240 or more strikeouts in a single season while under the age of 24, joining Gooden (24 wins, 268 strikeouts in 1985), Bert Blyleven (20 W, 258 SO in 1973) and Vida Blue (24 W, 301 SO in 1971).

Following his offseason trip to Zambia, Kershaw along with his wife, Ellen, started the Kershaw’s Challenge program (www.kershawschallenge.com) and this past season donated $100 for each of his league-leading 248 strikeouts to Arise Africa, an organization that helps to build orphanages in the African nation. The couple has been writing a book, Arise, about their life together and charitable endeavors in Africa and it will release in January 2012 after they return from their second trip to Zambia.

Kershaw earned his spot in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ single-season record books, ranking among team leaders in wins (T-7th), winning percentage (6th), ERA (11th), strikeouts (6th) and opponents’ batting average (11th). His 21 victories and 2.28 ERA were the best marks since Orel Hershiser went 23-8 with a 2.26 ERA in 1988 and his strikeout total was the highest for a Dodger since Sandy Koufax struck out 317 in 1966.

The seventh overall pick in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft earned his first All-Star selection in 2011 and was voted in to the Midsummer Classic via Player Ballot. In the game, he tossed a scoreless inning and needed just eight pitches to set down the side in order by striking out David Ortiz and retiring Robinson Cano and Alex Avila on infield grounders.

Kershaw was twice tabbed for National League Awards during the season, winning N.L. Pitcher of the Month in July and earning the league’s Player of the Week honor for the period of June 20-26. He went 4-1 with a 2.02 ERA in five July starts, tying for the N.L. lead in wins and ranking third in ERA. For his weekly honor, Kershaw went a perfect 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA (2 ER/18.0 IP), a two-hit shutout of the Tigers on June 20 and a complete game victory over the Angels on June 26.

Kershaw made his first Opening Day start this season, becoming the fifth-youngest Opening Day starter in L.A. Dodger history at 23 years and 12 days. Fernando Valenzuela was younger in 1981 (20, 159) and 1983 (22, 155) and Don Drysdale was younger in 1958 (21, 266) and 1959 (22, 262).

It was such a pleasure watching the kid pitch this year. You expect a Dodger win every time he takes the mound.

I cannot wait for the 2012 season to start.

Dodgers Sign Mark Ellis And Matt Treanor

After agreeing in principle to an eight-year extension with Matt Kemp yesterday, and making every Dodger fan happy as hell, Uncle Ned is back to his old ways, adding two more veterans to the roster.

This morning they announced the signing of second baseman Mark Ellis. The deal is for two years and $8.75 million and an option for a third year. With Jamey Carroll now playing in Minnesota, Ellis basically takes his place. I honestly didn't see this one coming. I really thought the Dodgers would go cheap at 2B in '12, playing Ivan DeJesus and Justin Sellers. Wrong.

The Los Angeles Dodgers today announced that they have signed second baseman Mark Ellis to a two-year contract with a club option for a third year in 2014. Dodger General Manager Ned Colletti made the announcement.

"Mark brings a veteran presence to our lineup and he knows how to handle the bat," said Colletti. "On defense, he's been one of the most dependable second basemen in baseball over the course of his career."

Ellis, 34, batted .248 with seven home runs, 41 RBI and a career high-tying 14 stolen bases in 132 combined games with Oakland and Colorado last season. After being acquired by Colorado on July 1, he finished the season by hitting .274 with six home runs and 25 RBI in 70 games as the Rockies' everyday second baseman.

Ellis led Major League second baseman with a .995 fielding percentage last season and has posted the top fielding percentage at the position three times in the last six years after also doing so in 2006 and 2008. The 2011 season marked Ellis' seventh consecutive season with a .990 or better fielding percentage and his .991 career fielding percentage as a second baseman is the second-best all-time (min. 750 games) behind only Placido Polanco's .993 mark. In 2006, Ellis posted a .997 fielding percentage, which was then a Major League record for a second baseman, and followed it up by setting an Athletics franchise record for second baseman with a 102-game errorless streak from May 14-Sept. 10, 2007.

The 10-year Major League veteran owns a .266 career batting average in 1,126 games with Oakland (2002-11) and Colorado (2011) and his 90 career home runs as a second baseman (92 total career homers) rank ninth among active Major Leaguers. Ellis is Oakland's all-time home run leader as a second baseman with 84 roundtrippers and overall ranks eighth on Oakland's all-time doubles list with 204 in 1,056 games with the A's.
Ellis has twice led Oakland in batting average, hitting a career-high .316 in 2005 and .291 in 2010, and established career bests in 2007 with 161 hits, 33 doubles, 19 homers and 76 RBI in 150 games.

The South Dakota native has been active off the field throughout his career and was honored as the 2007 recipient of the Dave Stewart Community Service Award, which is given annually to an Athletics player for outstanding work in the community. Ellis is also a two-time winner of Oakland's Catfish Hunter Award, which is presented annually to the Athletics player whose play on the field and conduct in the clubhouse best exemplifies the courageous, competitive and inspirational spirit demonstrated by the late Hall of Fame pitcher. The award is voted upon by Oakland A's players, coaches and staff.

Ellis was originally selected by Kansas City in the ninth round of the 1999 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Florida and traded to Oakland in 2001 as a part of a three-team, seven-player deal. He resides in Scottsdale, AZ with his wife, Sarah, and three children, Adelaide, Briggs and Dylan.

Then, tonight they announced the signing of catcher Matt Treanor to a one-year $850,000 deal with an option for 2013. The 36 year-old Treanor will replace Rod Barajas who left for Pittsburgh and is thought of as a defensive-minded catcher.

This is another one one I'm a little surprised at, but I really shouldn't be. I thought Barajas would be brought back. Since he wasn't, Ned had to go out and get a veteran catcher to replace him. There's no way he could go into 2012 with just AJ Ellis and Tim Federowicz.

The Garden Grove, CA native has started 50 or more games in five of the past six seasons and thrown out 22.1% of basestealers throughout his career, including a career-best 41.9 caught stealing percentage in 2006 with the Marlins (13-of-31).

Treanor, 35, caught a team-high 81 games (52-29, .642) for the Rangers in 2010 and played a big role in Texas' postseason run, catching all four of C.J. Wilson's starts and homering in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees.

The eight-year Major League veteran is a .225 career hitter and has suited up in the big leagues with Florida (2004-08), Detroit (2009), Texas (2010-2011) and Kansas City (2011). In 2011, he hit a combined .214 with three homers and 22 RBI in 72 games, including 64 starts, with the Royals and Rangers.

Treanor was originally selected by Kansas City in the fourth round of the 1994 First-Year Player Draft out of Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, CA. He is married to two-time Olympic beach volleyball gold medalist Misty May-Treanor and resides in Coral Springs, FL.

So what's next for Ned Colletti? Well, he said he isn't going after a big bat. The Dodgers still need at least one more starting pitcher. Could we see Hiroki Kuroda back? That's one veteran I wouldn't mind seeing in Dodger blue next year.

Dodgers, Bison Close To Long-Term Deal

It's been a while since I posted anything. As a matter of fact, I was planning on ending Dodgerbobble.com, but some great new has sucked me back into the blogosphere. This great news I speak of is the long-term contract the Dodgers are about to sign with Matt Kemp.

According to Ken Gurnick, the team is close to signing an 8-year, $160 extension with the MVP candidate. From Dodger.com:

The Dodgers and outfielder Matt Kemp have reached a preliminary agreement on a franchise-record eight-year, $160 million contract extension pending the passing of a physical exam, according to a baseball source.

The deal would be the biggest in franchise history, eclipsing the seven-year, $105 million deal signed by right-hander Kevin Brown in 1998.

However, at a Dodgers Dream Foundation event Monday in Compton, Calif., Kemp was mum on the subject, unwilling to make anything official just yet.

Kemp, a contender for the National League Most Valuable Player Award after winning a Rawlings NL Gold Glove Award and an NL Silver Slugger Award, just finished a two-year, $11.1 million deal. He is eligible for one more arbitration season before hitting free agency.The Dodgers under general manager Ned Colletti have not given a contract beyond Juan Pierre's five-year deal.

Colletti has said that locking up Kemp would be an offseason priority, and the center fielder has been the club's focus, even though Andre Ethier also has one season of arbitration eligibility remaining before he's able to be a free agent.

Kemp, 27, batted .324 (third in the NL) with 39 home runs and 126 RBIs in 2011, leading the NL in homers, RBIs, runs scored (115) and total bases (353). The 2011 NL All-Star also finished among the league leaders in multihit games (57, tied for first), hits (195, second), slugging percentage (.586, second), extra-base hits (76, second), stolen bases (40, tied for second), on-base percentage (.399, fourth) and walks (74, tied for eighth).

Kemp became the seventh player in Major League history to finish the season ranked in the top three in homers, batting average, RBIs and stolen bases in his respective league, joining Hall of Famers Ty Cobb (1907, '09-11), Honus Wagner ('08), George Sisler ('20), Chuck Klein ('32), Willie Mays ('55) and Hank Aaron ('63).

In addition, Kemp was the first Dodgers player to lead the NL in home runs and RBIs since Dolph Camilli in 1941 and the first player in Dodgers history to lead the NL in homers, RBIs and runs scored. He is one of five players all time to eclipse 30 homers, 35 stolen bases, 100 RBIs and a .310 average, joining Ken Williams ('22), Barry Bonds ('92), Alex Rodriguez ('98) and Vladimir Guerrero (2002).

This year, Kemp was voted by his teammates as the winner of the Roy Campanella Award, which goes to the Dodgers player who best exemplifies the spirit and leadership of the late Hall of Famer; he's received the Hank Aaron Award, as the most outstanding offensive player in the NL; the Baseball America Player of the Year; the NL Stan Musial Award, presented by the Baseball Bloggers Alliance; been named a finalist for the Players Choice Outstanding Player in the NL; and named to The Sporting News NL All-Star team.

If all this is true, I have to give some major props to Ned Colletti for getting this deal done. I honestly didn't think he could pull it off. Losing Kemp to free agency after the 2012 season is something the franchise couldn't let happen. Now, it looks like he'll be manning the Dodger Stadium outfield for the next eight years.

Player Appearance: Jerry West

Laker legend Jerry West made an appearance this past Wednesday at the ESPN Zone in Downtown Los Angeles. He was there promoting his new book "West By West: My Charmed, Tormented Life". This appearance was supposed to be part of the NBA's opening day festivities, but sadly the lockout was still in effect.

Mr. West was scheduled to appear from 6-7 pm. He would sign one book and one outside item per person. My buddy Tom and I arrived an hour early. We were about 75 people from the front. After us, only a few more people showed up. I'd say there was about 100 people there.

When 6 o'clock rolled around, we were told Jerry West was running 15 minutes late. Once he did arrive, he went straight to the media and did interviews. He didn't start signing until 7:00. The line moved very slowly.When we got into the signing area, we noticed he was chatting with people and taking pictures.

At around 8:00 we finally got to the table. Mr. Clutch was very nice. I thanked him for everything he's done for Laker Nation. He signed my book and one basketball card.

A New Duke Snider Auto In My Collection

Well, I missed the Los Angeles Sports Card & Memorabilia Show for the second year in a row. But I did have a good time at my local card shop this weekend. Valley Sports Cards hosted a big raffle event yesterday and the grand prize was an autographed Blake Griffin jersey. Some of the other prizes included different high end boxes of cards, a Kobe Bryant autograph and custom framing.

Raffle tickets were given to customers yesterday just for walking in, but the other way to get one was in a mystery pack, which was part of the Great Card Chase. They were sold for $15 each or two for $24. Each mystery pack includes 2 jersey and/or autograph cards, one rookie card, a raffle ticket and a chance to win one of three prizes in the chase. I picked up one mystery pack yesterday and I got a 1983 Fleer Tony Gwynn Rookie card, an Edgardo Alfonso jersey card #'d/150, a 1996 Upper Deck Amazing Greats Cal Ripken window card, and I won a third prize in the chase.

I had a couple of different items to chose from: an Andre Ethier autographed baseball, a Dodgers mini helmet signed by Steve Garvey, a Pete Rose autographed baseball, an Elmer Flick autograph, an Ian Kinsler autograph and a Duke Snider autograph. I went with the Duke Snider auto. Since he's passed away, it's nice to add another one of his auto's to my collection. This is a 2001 Upper Deck Ultimate Signatures #'d/150.

The raffle was held later that day. I didn't win anything, but I had a great time nevertheless. Thanks to Valley Sports Cards & Memorabilia for the Duke Snider auto. I'm looking forward to the next big raffle event, when they'll be giving away a signed Michael Jordan jersey as the grand prize.

2011 Topps Finest Dee Gordon Auto

Enough Cardinals.Time to get back to my Dodgers.

I picked up a few more autographs in the last couple week. One of them is this 2011 Topps Finest Dee Gordon refractor auto #'d/499. I'm really digging this set, which includes a Jerry Sands auto as well. There's multiple variations of this Gordon card, which I'm also trying to add to the collection.

Dee quickly became one of my favorite Dodgers in 2011, showing off a sweet glove at shortstop, a nice lead-off bat and some sick speed on the base paths. I think he's going to have a huge 2012, and can't wait to see what he can do playing in a full season. I've already had the pleasure of meeting Dee in person and getting an autograph. Hopefully I can pick up a few more.

Cards Win The World Series

It was a good series. I love it when it they go seven. Game six was an instant classic and one the best WS games ever. I've got to admit though, I'm a bit jealous of the St.Louis fans. It must be nice to win two of the last six World Series titles.

What a game last night, huh? That was one of the best World Series games I've ever seen, exciting to the end. It was fun watching the Rangers and Cards slug it out. Every time you thought the Rangers would end it, those Cards kept coming back.

Justin Sellers Appearance Postponed

The Justin Seller's appearance at Valley Sports Cards scheduled for November 12th has been postponed. The Dodgers have asked Justin to play Winter Ball in the Dominican Republic. The new date hasn't been scheduled yet, but it will take place in December. Here's the message from MVP Trading Cards:

25 Years Ago Today

Twenty-Five years ago today, Vin Scully made one of the most famous, or infamous calls in World Series history:

"So the winning run is at second base, with two outs, three and two to Mookie Wilson. A little roller up along first... behind the bag! It gets through Buckner! Here comes Knight, and the Mets win it!"

I can listen to Vinny anytime, it's like music to my ears. This call always gives me goosebumps though.

Player Appearance: Steve Garvey

Former Dodger Firstbaseman Steve Garvey made an appearance today at Sports Authority in Ontario. He was scheduled to meet fans and sign autographs from 1:00-2:30pm.

The Sports Authority at Ontario Mills held it's grand opening today. To celebrate, they gave away mystery gift cards to the first 250 people in line, a $500 shopping spree and had Garvey in for autographs. When we arrived at the store, about 200 people were in line. Once the Sports Authority staff started letting people in, the mystery gift cards were handed out at the door. They were scratchers, with a chance to win $5-$500. The card had to be used at that store that day and no purchase was necessary to use the card. I got a $10 card, so I just picked up a couple of baseball cubes and some snacks, then got in line for Garvey. This line was considerably shorter than the line for the gift cards.

Mr. Garvey arrived right at 1:00 and started signing about 15 minutes later. The staff took us in groups of thirty and told us one autograph per person and no pictures were allowed. Once I got to the front, I had him sign a baseball and I asked him for a pic, which he was happy to do.

After we got our autos, we jumped back in line for another. Time really was flying at this point. It was about 2:15 when we got to the front of the line, and we weren't sure if we'd get back in for the second signature. Luckily, we just made it. Garv was signing a little bit longer because of his late start, so I had him sign a baseball card.

That's me closing my eyes. I'm such a dork.

Today's event went very smoothly. The Sports Authority staff was very friendly and organized and Mr. Garvey was great as usual. Thanks to Gustavo of Authentic Signings for the tip on today's event and thanks to Alex of Lawler's Law and Andy for all your help. It was great seeing everyone else today too!

Matt Kemp made an appearance on the Ellen Degeneres Show today. He was there to show his support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Ellen had one of Matt's fans sit on a dunk tank, as he threw pitches trying to knock her in the water. If he did dunk her, $10,000 would be donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, plus Matt would match that $10,000 as well. Watch the video below to see if Matt throws a strike or not.

The World's Largest Collection Of Autographed Baseballs

Check out this guy's collection of autographed baseballs. He's got over 4,000 signed balls and is in the Guinness Book of World Records. You don't want to steal from him though. His collection, which includes nine signed Babe Ruth balls and a ball signed by Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio, is in a bomb proof vault. Oh yeah, him and his wife are strapped too. She carries a .45 automatic!

Some Recent Dodger Auto Pick Ups

I've picked up a couple Dodger autos in recent weeks. Like I said in a previous post, I'm trying to concentrate on some of the kids in the organization.

One of the young pitchers whose auto I'd been hunting for a while was Zach Lee. Lee was the Dodgers first-round draft pick in 2010. It took a $5.25 million signing bonus to keep him from playing Quarterback at Louisiana State. This was the highest signing bonus awarded to a Dodger draft pick since the $2.3 mil given to Clayton Kershaw in 2006. There are some high expectations for this kid, who went 9-6 with a 3.47 ERA at single-A Great Lakes. Here's his 2010 Bowman Sterling auto:

Here's another 2010 Bowman Sterling auto. This one is Dodger pitching prospect Aaron Miller, who was the Dodgers first-round draft pick in 2009. Miller's got the goods, but has battled injury. I'm hoping this kid can move up in the organization and put up some big numbers.

Here's another Dodger first-round pick who's had his ups and downs as a professional, Scott Elbert. It looks like the lefty finally found his place in the organization, as a reliever. He went 0-1 with a 2.43 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP in 33.1 innings pitched out of the bullpen for the Dodgers in 2011. This is his 2005 Topps Turkey Red auto #d out of 300.

The last auto for today is Justin Sellers. Sellers was one of the more exciting players to watch at the end of the 2011 season. He showed off his skills with the glove at 2B, SS and 3B and could be the utility guy in 2012 in place of Aaron Miles or Jamey Carroll. This is his 2007 Just Minors Auto.

Former Major league pitchers Jeff Suppan and Mark Gubicza made an appearance at Soup's Grill in Woodland Hills last night. Soup's Grill is owned by Jeff Suppan, who grew up in the San Fernando Valley and attended Crespi High School in Encino.

Last week I was driving by Pierce College in Woodland Hills when I noticed a picture of Jeff Suppan and Jon Garland on the giant video billboard outside of the school. The ad invited fans to join the two pitchers, both of whom are San Fernando Valley natives, and the Brahma Athletic Club for some playoff baseball at Soup's Grill on Thursday, October 13. The restaurant is just a few minutes from my home, so I was pretty excited about going.

When I got to the restaurant, I found out Jon Garland had cancelled and was replaced with former major leaguer and current Angels broadcaster Mark Gubicza. Gubby and Sup watched the St. Louis Cardinals/Milwaukee Brewers LCS game with the fans and held a Q&A session. They were asked some great questions and gave a lot of inside information on the great game. Afterwards, the two took pictures and signed autographs.

I had a wonderful time at Soup's Grill last night. It was a great environment for a sports fan and collector like myself. The place is like a mini sports museum. There's signed jerseys, pictures and memorabilia hanging up all over the place. Mike and Teresa both joined me and we all agreed that the food was amazing too. I had the Tommy Pastrami sandwich, which I highly recommend.

Before I left, I asked Mr. Suppan if he would hold another event like this again, and he said he would since this one was pretty successful. I'm looking forward to the next one.

Bobblehead Of The Day: Ken Griffey Sr.

Thirty-five years ago this week, the Cincinnati Reds won the World Series, sweeping the New York Yankees. The "Big Red Machine" won their second consecutive Fall Classic, and one of the biggest bats on that team was Ken Griffey Sr. who batted .336 that season.

Today the senior Griffey is manager of the Bakersfield Blaze, single-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. On Friday, August 19, the team honored their manager with a bobblehead. The first 500 fans in attendance received the nodder as the Blaze took on the Lake Elsinore Storm that night and won, 6-4.

The great thing about living in Southern California is that there are a lot of baseball options out here. Besides the Dodgers and Angels, there's a handful of minor league teams that play in the California League, which always means more bobblehead giveaways. Thanks to the Bakersfield Blaze and Dan Besbris for the getting this bobblehead to me, I really appreciate it! I can't wait to make it out to a Blaze game next year.

Player Appearance: Don Newcombe

Dodger great Don Newcombe made an appearance today at Frank & Sons Collectibles. He was scheduled to sign autographs from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm.

I arrived at F&S at around 10:00 and purchased my ticket. When I got there I expected to see a large crowd because there were a few Dodgers signing besides Newk, including Manny Mota, Wes Parker, Tim Leary, Steve Lyons and Javy Guerra. It was pretty dead there though.

Newcombe ran a little late, arriving at around noon, but once he arrived, he began signing right away. I had him sign a ball, but I had a difficult time deciding on that. I was going back and forth between his bobblehead or the ball, and in the end I chose the ball because my recent bobbleahead autos have turned out crappy. Back in February, I tried to get Newk to sign the bobblehead for me and was unsuccessful. I really should've gotten both signed today, and now I'm regretting it. Oh well, I'll get another opportunity at the bobblehead in the future.

Mr. Newcombe was very friendly as usual, shaking hands with everyone and even chatting a little with the fans. Thanks to Frank and Sons for holding another great Dodger event and thanks to Don Newcombe for the autograph. Quick shoutout to David, winner of the Duke Snider bobblehead contest, it was nice meeting you today. And of course, it was great seeing everyone else.
